COMPARING TEACHING METHODS

Aggressive swimming programs use pressure and coercion to achieve rigid goals. The child centered approach is very different, and progresses at the child’s pace (Rob and Kathy McKay,2005 learn to swim, DKPUBLISHING, INC. p14)

GOAL-DOMINATED PROGRAM

CHILD-CENTERED PROGRAM

skill comes first

child comes first

time-frame is rigid and there is pressure to perform

time-frame is flexible and depends on

child’s readiness

force and coercion are used to teach survival skills

gentle guiding and encouragement help a child accomplish goals

teacher is dominant

progress at child’s pace

no-nonsense format

fun, playful learning
